Philips Phonokoffer Luxus-Cocktail AG4456 F/00

Historical Background
The Philips AG4456F/00, marketed in Austria as the "Luxus-Cocktail" and known in Germany as the SK65, is a portable record player from the early 1960s. At that time, the gramophone record had become one of the most popular forms of home entertainment, and manufacturers increasingly offered compact all-in-one players that combined record deck, amplifier and loudspeaker in a single portable unit.
The suitcase-style design allowed music to be enjoyed in different rooms of the home and reflected changing listening habits of the period. Rather than gathering around a large radio set in the living room, younger listeners increasingly preferred playing their own records whenever and wherever they wished.
With its distinctive cream and red colour scheme, simple controls and integrated loudspeaker, the AG4456F/00 is a characteristic example of Philips consumer audio design from the early 1960s and illustrates the transition from radio-centred entertainment to personal music reproduction.
Technical Description
The AG4456 combines a compact record player with a built-in valve amplifier and loudspeaker. It was primarily intended for the playback of 45 rpm records, although additional speeds could also be selected depending on the fitted mechanism.
The loudspeaker is mounted in the lid of the carrying case, which doubles as a sound baffle when the player is in use. This arrangement allowed Philips to create a surprisingly compact unit while still providing adequate sound volume for domestic listening.
The record player uses a crystal pickup cartridge and a simple tonearm designed for reliable everyday operation rather than high-fidelity reproduction. Such players were intended to make recorded music accessible and convenient at a time when separate amplifier and loudspeaker systems were still relatively expensive.
Although technically simple compared with later hi-fi equipment, the AG4456 represents an important stage in the evolution of domestic audio equipment. It reflects the transition from large furniture-style radios and radiograms to smaller, more personal music systems.
Condition
This Philips AG4456 F/00 is preserved in unrestored condition (as acquired).
The cream-coloured cabinet, red loudspeaker lid and original controls are still present and provide a good impression of the appearance intended by Philips. Surface wear, discoloration and traces of use are consistent with a device that was regularly used and stored over a long period.
In its current condition, the AG4456 documents both the design style and the practical everyday technology of the early 1960s.
