Philips Super Adagio BA531A

The Philips Super Adagio BA531A is an Austrian Philips table radio from 1952/1953. It belongs to the early post-war generation of high-quality domestic receivers, built before FM became common in many household radios. The set is a large wooden table model and was clearly intended as a well-finished piece of furniture as much as a radio receiver. Radiomuseum lists the BA531A as a six-valve AC superheterodyne receiver with long wave, medium wave and short wave coverage.

The Philips Super Adagio was offered in two closely related versions: the BA531A as an AC mains receiver with a power transformer, and the BA531U as an AC/DC universal-current version using U-series valves. The restored set shown here is the BA531A version, fitted with the ECH42 / EAF42 / EBC41 / EL41 / EM34 / AZ41 valve line-up and intended for 110–240 V AC operation.

Unlike later Philips sets with VHF/FM reception, the Super Adagio BA531A is an AM receiver for LW, MW and SW. Its circuitry is typical of a better early-1950s radio: a superheterodyne design with an intermediate frequency of 458.5 kHz, seven AM tuned circuits, a tuning indicator and a dynamic loudspeaker. The set also includes details such as an input band filter for medium wave and switchable bandwidth, features that underline its position as a more refined receiver of its time.

Cabinet and Design

The cabinet of the Super Adagio BA531A follows the design language of early-1950s European radios: wide, solid and visually restrained, with the speaker area and tuning scale forming the main front elements. The polished wooden cabinet gives the set a warm domestic appearance and makes it look less like a technical instrument and more like part of the living room furniture.

The relatively large cabinet also supports the acoustic character of the radio. Even though this is an AM-only set, the wooden enclosure and the dynamic loudspeaker give speech and music a full and pleasant tone, especially when the radio is operated with a local AM transmitter or a good long-wire antenna.

Restoration Notes

This Philips Super Adagio BA531A was carefully restored while preserving as much of its original appearance as possible.

The cabinet and chassis were cleaned inside and outside. The wooden cabinet was refinished with several layers of hard oil, restoring the warm appearance of the wood without making it look overly modern.

The old speaker cloth was replaced with a new one. This greatly improves the visual appearance of the front while keeping the radio close to its original style.

All capacitors were renewed in a conservation-friendly way. The original capacitor bodies were opened, fitted with modern components inside, and then carefully closed again. This preserves the historical look of the chassis while restoring electrical reliability.

The dial cord had to be replaced. A new cord was fitted and the tuning mechanism was adjusted so that the pointer again moves correctly across the scale.

A further mechanical problem concerned the tuning capacitor. The original rubber buffers had become brittle and had crumbled away. These rubber mounts were replaced, giving the tuning capacitor proper mechanical support again and preventing unwanted movement or stress in the tuning mechanism.

After the restoration, the Philips Super Adagio BA531A once again presents itself as a representative Austrian Philips radio from the early 1950s: technically solid, visually elegant and characteristic of the AM radio era just before FM receivers became standard in many European homes.
